Yard Displays
Yard displays are just what the name implies - yards adorned with all sorts of Halloween decorations. Besides the obvious, they are also your best value for affordable Halloween season event for the entire family. Not only are most yard displays safe for children of all ages, they are also plentiful, with many to be found in all areas, and they are FREE, which certainly helps with budgeting!
If you think that yard displays are simply random collections of store bought static props that aren't too exciting, think again! While there certainly are some yard displays that fall into this category, almost all of the displays that we at Horror Tourers visit feature elaborate setups with homemade props, often with a particular theme. These props showcase the creativity of the operators of the displays and often are unique to a given property - in other words, when you go to a yard display you are usually going to see something at one that you'll never see at another, which provides great variety for the Halloween fan. And did we mention they are FREE? Some interesting yard displays that we have seen in recent years include Dead End Cemetery in Roselle, House of Hammer Horror in Chicago (which features a theme focusing on Hammer Horror movies), Monster Mash (also in Chicago), which features a Universal movie monster theme, and Monsters on Morris in Homewood, which features lots of real (only slightly used) coffins. In addition to static props, many yard displays also feature animated props (some designed by hand) that add some unique flair to the setup. Some creative displays include the Devil's Playground in Oak Lawn, Haunted 4 Life in Lansing, and Hills of Unrest in New Lenox. Finally, some yard display operators accentuate their displays with live actors on certain nights, which adds to the atmosphere and gives visitors some of the scares of a professional haunted house without the price. Some examples include Sunny Acres in Mokena, and Spirits on Sproat in Oak Lawn. If you're looking for no cost, quality Halloween entertainment, look no further than the various yard displays in and around Chicagoland. For a list of our reviews by haunt type, click here. |
