Were the stories true or simply some very cool publicity? Either way, we wanted to check out Grimbold Manor, so the stories worked on us! When we arrived the haunt operator was outside working on some props and stopped to chat with us about some of them. We noticed a prominent tombstone for Edgar Allen Poe, complete with a large crack in it. We've seen a lot of tombstones during our tours, from standard ones to comical ones, to ones for famous Hollywood monsters and characters, to ones for real actors, to ones done as dedications to lost friends or family. However, we don't recall seeing a yard display with an elaborate Poe tombstone before. It was a nice touch that set the display apart from others we have seen.
The owner mentioned it was his first year and he hoped to expand, which would be nice to given, given what was there already. Although small, the display was detailed, from the aforementioned Poe tombstone, to various others scattered about, to several clever animatronic props. Additionally, the front of the garage area was made up as a large crypt with the "Grimbold Manor" name on it and a large, hovering ghost in the center of it. The fact that it was off to the side and slightly in the background added an eerie quality to the proceedings.
Unfortunately we didn't take our camera with us, so we were not able to get any shots of the setup. However, the owner was very enthusiastic about his display, and was looking forward to continuing it in the future. Given the really cool nature of the Grimbold Manor web site, and the sinister background story (similar to the web site for Midsom Manor in Lansing), we look forward to whatever creative expansion the owner has in mind for 2013!
