1119 N. Forrest Avenue, Arlington Hts, IL
year: 2014
Scary's Forrest Frights is a display that we have been wanting to get to for several years now. It had made our list every year but for one reason or another we have never managed to visit it. Thus, in 2014 we made a point of stopping and we're very glad we did!
Scary's is easily one of the most varied yard displays we have seen. The setup encompasses almost every inch of a very large circular driveway, including the house, the main lawn, the side parts of the lawn, and even some areas in the back. The entire display is dominated by two giant wooden skeletons that guard the front door of the house. These stand at least 12 feet tall and are entirely handmade. Frankly, it's worth visiting Scary's just for that. However, there is much, much more to see, with many mini-scenes plus an array of life size figures. And although you will find lots of ghouls and ghosts here, you won't find and of the more "stock" characters - each of the creations here is unique, and many are animated, including a skeleton stirring a cauldron and a twitching hanging man suspended from a giant tree in the middle of the yard. and all are accented with excellent lighting that brings out the creepiness. It's obviously a labor of love for everyone involved in putting the display together, and their efforts really succeed in creating a Halloween fantasy land that can be enjoyed by both young and old. And despite some of the more macabre elements, Scary's is not necessarily scary (no pun intended). It's creepy but with a bit of fun and frivolity thrown in. There is a lot to see here, so much in fact, that one visit (and one walkthrough video) is really not enough to capture everything. It's fun for the whole family, and well worth a repeat visit. In fact, we'd rank Scary's Forrest Frights as one of the best yard displays we've seen ,and certainly one of our top displays for 2014. Welcome to the Horror Tourers Hall of Fame for 2014! |
