6101 S. Nagle, Chicago, IL
year: 2013
Nagle's Chaos Korner is a brand new yard display, located not far from one of our favorites, Eerie Acres. Since we were in the area, we decided to check it out. The display is large, especially for the south side of Chicago, and it makes good use of the extra space afforded to the house since it is on a corner (hence the name of the haunt)
The house itself is decorated to look as if it is abandoned, and on the night we visited things were pretty quiet in the neighborhood, which added to the feeling of isolation. The primary themes of the haunt are demonic children and zombie=like creatures. The left hand side of the display is made up to look like a twisted day care center, with lots of creepy children and odd playthings.. There are evil clowns, hollow-eyed children on slides and see saws, a couple of children stabbing their stuffed animals, and other unsettling images. To the right, numerous zombies and other children appear, including a haunted-looking child on a crashed big wheel, a creepy skeletal grandmother in a rocking chair, Freddy Krueger riding from a grave, and even a creepy old caretaker with a shovel, just waiting to make room for new victims. The displays are complemented by subdued colored lighting which makes it difficult to determine from a distance whether or not some of the figures are real people. There was one female figure with a burnt face that was quite realistic and we had to walk directly up to her before we realized she wasn't real. Very effective! Also present in the display are some life size figures from The Nightmare before Christmas, which is not something we usually see at haunts, so extra points for that! Overall we really enjoyed our visit to Nagle's Chaos Korner. It was creepy, unsettling, made good use of space and lighting, and had some unusual setups. In fact, we've probably not seen as many creepy children in one place as we did here. We're looking forward to seeing what's in store for 2014!
