Likes and Dislikes

Over the years that we have been touring, we've come across a lot of things that we have liked, from creative twists on old ideas, to elaborate setups, to things that just plain stand out from the ordinary. Conversely, we've also developed a dislike for certain things that we encounter in haunted houses. For details on what we like and don't like, check out our videos below.

What We Don't Like

Let's face it. Not all haunts are great, and even though we like the majority of haunts we visit, some things we encounter simply are not fun or enjoyable. Of course, the amount of people at a haunt (and how loud and/or obnoxious they can be) can make a difference, but that's not the fault of the haunt.

What usually takes away from a haunt experience for us are things that he haunt can control, like patron flow inside the haunt, or the level of detail in the sets, the length, and the price. At right are a couple of videos with some of our pet peeves about haunts. Check 'em out!

Laura

Horror Tourer Laura shares some of the things that make haunts less fun for her.

What We Do Like

We've seen a lot of haunts, and almost all of them have something to recommend them. Of course, coming up with something new and different every year is a challenge, and some haunts tend to repeat certain scenes from year to year. There's nothing wrong with that, though - as the old saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", and there are many horror themes, like Michael Meyers for example, that are fun to see repeated year after year.

Each haunt, regardless of what's inside it, is a unique experience, although the more you visit them, the more you come to expect certain scenes, like a funeral scene, or a crazy doctor's surgery, or some creepy clowns. The difference is usually down to the scenes and the actors, which can make or break a haunt. We often looks for these little things that make a haunt go from very good to exceptional. Below are some of the things that we've really been impressed with over the years. Take a look at the videos to see what we liked and why we liked it.

The Unexpected

A lot of haunts are alike, and when you've been to as many as we have over the years, you can usually predict the types of things you are going to see. Thus, nothing makes a haunt stand out more than when they put a different spin on the same old, same old.

Creepiness Factor

Two of our favorite things in haunts are elaborate sets and actors who do more than just jump out and scare. Quiet, creepy acting can be most effective.

the "creepiness factor" for us.

Dream Reapers

We present our overview of the Dream Reapers Christmas haunt from 2011. It was great fun, and Paul had one of his few genuine scares - from an unlikely source!
