One of our favorite things here at Horror Tourers is being able to visit entirely new displays, which is why we always make a point of hitting new displays whenever we come across them. Such is the case with a display we visited in Darien.
This setup was simply called “Haunted Yard Display” and didn’t come with a description, so we weren’t sure what to expect. We did find a nice selection of props on the front lawn and some extra decorations on the porch and on the house itself. In a slightly different approach to the typical yard display, this one was not set up like a graveyard, although it was surrounded by a fence. Instead of various tombstones, there were various mini-scenes scattered around the yard. While several of them were familiar (zombies, guillotine, a hanging man in a tree, et al) there were others that were somewhat unique. These included a burned skeleton hanging from the corner of the fence and some body parts in an overturned wheelbarrow. The house, too, was included in the setup, and featured very large wooden boards over all of its windows and across the front door. Another creative thing was a real street sign that normally said “watch for children”, with the word “dead” spray painted over the “watch for” – a nice touch. There was even a voodoo scene with a sort of voodoo priest with a screaming head on the spike. Perhaps our favorite portion of the entire display was a prop that could easily be missed. It was a deer statue of the kind that anyone might have on their lawns, but this deer was painted over with a design that looked like its bones were sticking out from its body and that turned its face into a grinning skull head – a small change in something normal that made it creepy. Very clever! While there is not a ton to see here, there is certainly enough to make it worth stopping to take a look. As none of the props move, it won’t be so scary for younger children, so feel free to take the family! |
