18033 OAKWOOD AVENUE, LAnsing, IL
Year: 2014
Here’s a haunt that makes our list of “haunts with creepy names.” It’s Haunted Hell in Lansing, IL. In some ways the name is a bit redundant - we suppose Hell would be haunted, just virtue of the fact that it’s full of torments souls and such – it’s not like that fact needs to be advertised. Despite the name, though, the display itself has little in the way of fire and brimstone, but does feature some demonic looking characters, including a life size figure of death.
Covering the entire front yard of the property, Haunted Hell features a variety of characters, including an electrocution victim, the headless horseman, death (as mentioned previously), and even a wolflike creature in a cage hanging from a tree. |

One of the creepiest figures is a man lying in an open coffin with a strobe light flashing near him. The strobe makes it difficult to tell if he is a real person or not, and his eyes also appear to follow visitors as they walk along the sidewalk.
Overall, there’s not a lot of yard space at this display, but what there is is used effectively, filling the front lawn with ghouls and other fiendish characters, all complemented by light, smoke, and sound effects. It makes for a very cool visit, especially if you manage to visit on a quiet weeknight, where there are few cars or other visitors. The quiet calm of the residential street adds to the creepiness factor, plus Haunted 4 Life (with its foreboding haunted house setup) is right across the street – two scares in one!
