16411 S. Roy Street, Oak Forest, IL
year: 2013
Graveyard on Roy street is a display located in Oak Forest, home to some of our favorite yard displays and home haunts, including Frankenstein's Wedding and Nightmare on Newport. It falls more into the humorous category, as opposed to the scary, but it's one that has grown over the years and one that we make a point of visiting each time were are in the Oak Forest area.
Consistent with its name, the design of this display is one of a graveyard, complete with multiple tombstones, decrepit wooden fence, and lots of cobwebs. Most of the tombstones are of the funny variety, with sayings like 'Here lies Nick, I told you I was sick" and "Johnny Walker red and black, dies in his brand new Cadillac." Along with the tombstones are various life size figures, ranging from a wolfman along the fence to skeletons sitting around a table, to a cannibal in front of a table full of body parts, to a wizard type figure watching over the graveyard. Some of the more unusual additions for this year included a skeleton in sunglasses taking a bloody bath in a metal tub and a full-size coffin on a funeral bier topped with a skeletal candelabra. Our favorite figure was a Jason Voorhees-like figure with hockey mask and knife, who was positioned towards the back of the display. He was wearing real gym shoes, and since it was dark out, it was very difficult to tell if he was a prop or a live actor standing very still. As we were viewing the display, we kept looking over our shoulders to see if he was moving. It took us taking a photo with the flash on to see that it was a prop. Very well done. Overall, we enjoy visiting Graveyard on Roy, and are happy to see that the display has grown and changed over the years. It's definitely one that younger kids would enjoy, as it's lower of scares and higher on the "cute" factor, so if you're in the area check it out!
