19783 Fiona Avenue, Mokena, IL
year: 2014
Fear on Fiona is one of a trilogy of great yard displays in Mokena and it happened to be the first one open this season, so naturally were were anxious to make a stop.
The location has a very large front yard, and each pert of it is used up with various themed displays. Starting on the left, there is a crematorium setup, which is always a highlight. It features a coffin being moved into the crematorium oven, which is cleverly set up with a mirror, lights, and wind effects to make it seem like there is a raging fire inside. The coffin is weathered and has a plexiglass top so visitors can look at the body inside - a creepy way to start off the display, and something we have yet to see elsewhere. Continuing on the left there is a small scene with skeletons behind a fence and a stand advertising Hannbial's Meat Market. Moving to the right, the main portion of the display consists on various scenes, both famous and not so famous. Famous ones include a spinning-headed Reagan on a padded bed, which is straight out of The Exorcist, a small Saw figure on a moving tricycle, and the Frankenstein monster and his bride. The not-so-famous scenes include some inbred cannibal like figures in overalls, carrying pitchforks and presiding over some body parts, some aliens and their little spaceship (which is not something one normally sees as a haunt display), and a huge pendulum slicing an unfortunate victim in half. In between there are lots of interesting touches, such as a representation of Cerberus, the two-headed dog that guards the gates to Hades, a skeletal bridal couple, and even an alligator - again, not something you usually see at a haunt display. In addition, all of the large windows of the main house are decorated with ghoulish figures resembling skeletal specters in rags. Each is bathed in eerie green, red, or blue lighting, and all have wind blowing across them, making them appear to move in the dim light. There is even a demon like creature in black at the very top of the house. In short, there's a lot to see here, both whimsical and creepy in nature. It takes quite a while just to walk through and see all of the props that are on display, and on certain nights live actors prowl around the grounds looking for unsuspecting victims. It's really fun to come on a weekend night when live actors are abundant and simply watch them terrorize people walking in front oft he house. Always a good time!
We'd recommend Fear on Fiona, along with the other displays in the Mokena area, including Grant's Graveyard and Krohn's House of Terror. You won't be disappointed! |
